Grandma Rourke's Irish Bread

This irish bread is wonderful hot from the oven smothered with fresh butter(none of that margarine spread business[at least in this case]). this recipe is from my grandmother, who came to this country in the year 1900 from ireland. since she was always pretty poor(in possessions/money) this is a cheap to make recipe.

Steps

Mix together flour , baking powder , salt , sugar , and raisins.
Next , make a well in the center of the flour mixture for the egg.
Crack the egg into the well in the flour mixture.
Add the milk a little at a time , making sure to keep batter thick.
Grease and flour a nine-inch round pan.
Spread batter into the pan.
Brush over top of the bread mixture with the remaining milk , for browning.
Make an x or cross with the milk , to let the fairies out.
Bake at 400 degrees fahrenheit for thirty minutes.
At the end of thirty minutes , turn the oven temperature down to 350 degrees and leave the bread in the oven for a further fifteen minutes , or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
