Crispy cabbage casserole

Steps


Grease an ovenproof dish or casserole.
Trim the outer leaves and stalk from the cabbage.
Shred it , not too finely , wash it well , and drain.
Peel and chop the onion.
Scrape and wash the celery and cut into 1 in lengths.
Heat the oil and butter in a frying pan , and fry the onion gently for 2-3 minutes until soft.
Add the celery and drained cabbage , fry gently for a further 5 minutes , stirring occasionally.
Heat the oven at 400f / 200c / gas mark 6-7.
Make a white sauce with the remaining ingredients.
Put the vegetable mixture into the greased dish.
Pour the white sauce over the top.
Crumble or grate the bread into crumbs , and sprinkle these on top of the sauce.
Dot with a knob of butter.
Bake for 15 minutes in the hot oven until the top is crunchy and golden brown.
